You Have Alternatives....

To obtain a World Sailing International Offshore SAS course certificate, you may

  1. Take the Saturday Classroom Seminar below, or the USSailing ONLINE course. These qualify you take a hands-on course to get your certificate. Some convenient nearby courses include March 24 (USNA) and May 19 at SUNY by the Storm Trysail Club.   You may find a broader list including all sanctioned courses here.
  2. Take one of the preliminary courses noted above and Get on the waiting list Here for a hands-on course. If a spot does not open up in our courses, you'll need to take the completion course elsewhere to qualify for the World Sailing Certificate.

Safety at Sea Classroom Seminar  (Saturday, March 10) 

  • Fulfills the requirement for one-day US Sailing Offshore Safety at Sea Seminars. It covers topics such as heavy weather, lessons learned from recent incidents, Bermuda Race regulations updates, marine weather, offshore communications, medical matters, man overboard prevention and recovery, crew preparation and training, essentials of damage control, personal safety equipment, and more.
  • 0800 to 1700.  Marriott Newport, America's Cup Ave.,  Newport, RI.  Lunch provided

World Sailing Practical Hands-on Training (Sunday, March 11) THIS COURSE IS CURRENTLY FULL.

  • Combined with the Saturday classroom seminar, this yields the coveted World Sailing (formerly ISAF) Approved Offshore Personal Survival Course certificate.  
  • Attendees will gain knowledge in the use of life rafts, boarding, and righting skills from experienced instructors. Flares and fire-fighting skills will also be covered. World sailing certification includes hands-on training with your life jacket and inflation, as well as pool time with your inflated life jacket in offshore clothing. An exam (passing grade of 80) is part of the certification process
  • 0800-1700 St. George's School Field House
  • Prerequisite: A Safety at Sea Classroom Seminar (like the March 10 session above) or another US Sanctioned Offshore SAS seminar within the twelve months prior to this March 11 hands on training.

World Sailing Practical Hands-on Training Refresher / Certificate Completion (Saturday, March 10) (FULL)

  • This course is for sailors who need to  refresh their existing ISAF/World Sailing certification, or who have completed the online training and wish to obtain the World Sailing certificate. This one day session includes seminar and practical hands-on training.
  • 0800 to 1700.  Marriott Newport, America's Cup Ave.,  Newport, RI. Lunch provided.
  • Prerequisite: Existing or expired ISAF (World Sailing) Certificate or Online USSailing SAS Course Completion (see note) or two Offshore Safety at Sea seminars in the past ten years (look yourself up here.)

Newport Bermuda Race Preparation Seminar (Sunday, March 11)

  • This half day seminar is aimed at sailors preparing for the race, with veteran racers contributing knowledge of the NBR prize structure, race rating rules, winning strategies, Gulf Stream weather, preparation of the boat and sail selection..

Medical Seminar (Sunday March 11)

  •  The half day medical seminar is designed for medical officers on the vessel, and offers a comprehensive review of emergency medicine combined with a series of scenarios for interactive discussion

  • If you choose to obtain World Sailing certificate by doing the online course combined with the hands-on training course, you must complete the online course at least a week before Saturday's seminar to allow time for US Sailing to process your completion certificate. Your online course completion must be recorded by US Sailing before you may attend the Saturday refresher session. No exceptions. Please start early – the online course is comprehensive and has on line examinations for each section. Experience shows it will take up to 12 to 20 hours to complete the online course.
